OSM 6 Electronic Timing System

Notes prepared by Bill Hyduk

1. Pre-Operation Setup

Connect the battery, touch pad harness, transducer, scoreboard, etc. as described on the inside cover of the OSM6.

2. Operational Setup

2.1 Turn on the OSM6 console. The power switch is located at the rear right of the console.

2.2 The OSM6 display screen will request some information which you are required to enter. Provide the appropriate answers as shown below. (Note: the order of these requests may differ from the order shown.)

Date month/day/year (e.g. 042898) Enter

Time hour/minute/second (e.g. 175900) Enter {Make the time a little later than the actual time of day.}

Sync After the time has been entered, the display will read "sync". When the entered time and the actual time of day match, press Test/Start to synchronize the OSM6

Scbd The OSM6 can display the heat results in four different ways, so you need to select one of these. The choices are as follows.

Scbd + 1 One lane per place

Scbd + 2 One lane per lane

Scbd + 3 Multilane per place

Scbd + 4 Multilane per lane

{Per place shows time in order of finish; per lane shows time by lane, not fastest to slowest times; multilane indicates 8 lane or other number of lanes shown on a full display scoreboard. e.g. for the shallow end at the Etobicoke Olympium you would normally select Scbd + 3 and in the deep end Scbd + 1}

If the display screen shows the wrong one, simply press Next until the correct selection appears, then press Enter.

Prec This sets the time printout accuracy to 1/100 or 1/1000 sec. Normally this is set to 1/100 sec. The display will show Prec 1 or Prec 2. Press Next to change the selection shown. When correct, press Enter.

The display screen will show lanes 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0. For an eight lane pool, 9 & 0 are not used. Delete these by pressing 9 and 0. If the wrong lane number was pressed, it can be re-entered by pressing

the lane number key again. When the correct selections have been made, press Enter.

Check that the printout paper roll is sufficient for the session. If not, then replace it.

The unit is now ready for meet operation. Test that the start, flash, and pads are working properly.

Press Test + Start simultaneously. Let the scoreboard clock run for at least 15 seconds, then hit each touch pad to confirm they register a finish time.

The pre-meet setup is now completed.

3. Meet Operation

A Ready the system for the actual swim meet. First trigger the start {following the instructions given in the START section below} then by entering the Event and Heat numbers. This is done by first pressing Event/Heat, then typing in the event number (e.g. 062). {Note that there are three spaces for this number.} After the last digit in the event number is typed in, the display will automatically move to the heat selection. type in the heat number (e.g. 01), then press Enter. This can be changed by repeating the above.

B Enter the number of laps for the event. This is the number of times the swimmer will contact the pads during the event. Short Course is 1 lap per 50 m; Long Course is 1 lap per 100 m if only 1 set of pads is in use or 2 laps per 100 m if 2 sets of pads are in use. Press LAP, type in the number of laps (e.g. 01), then press Enter.

C Set the Arm Time. This is the length of time that a touch pad will remain inactive after a touch has been made by a swimmer. This is set to 15 sec. by the OSM6 automatically if a time is not put in. The range is 1 - 99 sec. Press Arm Time, type in your selected arm time, and press Enter. {Note: the Event/Heat, Lap, and Arm Time selections can be reviewed at any time by pressing the appropriate key. You then return to the program by pressing ESC. Recommended range is 15 sec for 25 m pool and 45 sec for 50 m pool using one set of pads only.}

Operation During Meet

START

Press LANE ON + START simultaneously to set the timing system for the start. The unit will be triggered by the start mechanism in the Starter's control. This should be done before you enter event and heat numbers to keep heat numbers accurate. {Note: If operating the OSM6 in the electronics booth at the Etobicoke Olympium, the start is set by pressing the RED coloured key in the lower right hand corner of the console + START together.

EMPTY LANES

If there are empy lanes in the heat being swum, deactivate those lanes by holding down the NOT USED and the empty lane number key together for each lane that is not used. This may be done prior to the start or at any time during the race. It is important to declare empty lanes when electronic results are sent directly to a computer in the Recorder/Scorer area. At the completion of the heat, the heat number advances by one and all lanes are active again.

Operation During Meet

by pressing ERASE, followed by the LANE #, then ENTER.

MISSED START

If the OSM6 was not reset before the next race was started, it can be inserted as follows. Press LANE ON + START simultaneously. Then press in order INS, START, ENTER, LAST, and ENTER. {Note: The activation of the start by the Starter registers in the OSM6 and the inserted start is from the Starter's signal when put in as described above.}

RELAYS

During the relays, the swimmers that have completed their part of the race may not get out of the pool until after the touchpad has rearmed. A potential erroneous time could result. This can be averted by getting the swimmers out of the pool soon enough, or by disabling the touchpad by holding down the lane number key until the swimmer is out. {Note: Only one lane can be disabled using this method. To disable more than one lane at the same time, hold down LANE OFF + ALL together.} Some pools have switches that turn the pads off...just remember to turn them back on again.

VIEWING INFORMATION

The OSM6 operator can view various settings and system information at any time by pressing the appropriate key, checking the information, and then return by pressing the ESC key. You can view PROG, ARM TIME, DATE, LAP, EVENT/HEAT, Scbd, or DISPLAY.

RUNNING TIME

To display the running time, first press Scbd and then ENTER.

DISPLAY RESULTS

To display the results of the last touch on the pads, press Scbd, then RSLT, then ENTER. To return, press Scbd, then ENTER. On a single line scoreboard, the finishing times can be displayed by pressing Scbd, then RSLT, then ENTER. Each time will be displayed for four seconds from the fastest to the slowest. After displaying the results, it will end by showing the fastest time again.

DISPLAY TIME OF DAY

To display the time of day, press Scbd, then 4, then ENTER. To return, press Scbd, then ENTER.

OOPS!

If a race is in progress and the operator resets the start inadvertently, return to the race by pressing LANE OFF + START.
